The Festival of Stuff 2025: Masterclasses
A huge thank you to all those who joined the Festival of Stuff 2025!
It was a pleasure to host you at Bloomsbury for our specialist making masterclasses, and an honour to share our Stratford space with you for our spectacular festival finale, the Festival of Stuff Saturday Extravaganza.
This year, our five-day public celebration of making and materials started by revisiting some of our most popular masterclasses of the year gone by, providing the public with the invaluable opportunity to get stuck into specialist hands-on making processes for free.
We hosted the Masterclass programme in our beloved Bloomsbury space, offering tuition by highly-skilled makers in a range of different disciplines, from culinary seaweed explorations to detail-oriented Japanese joinery. We twisted silver wire, embroidered historic stitches through electronic components, and took on expressive Materials Library drawing, delightfully delicate papermaking and ropemaking with rags.
We continued our efforts to make the programme accessible to as many different people as possible by running our events across weekdays and weekends, and through using a ballot system for tickets.
As always, the demand for our free making masterclasses was high: over 1,150 people entered the draw for tickets this year, and waiting lists for each activity counted up to 200 people.
Masterclass Week
For the first time in Festival of Stuff history, we welcomed a sound designer, Ed, tasked with capturing the diverse sounds of making. Keep an eye out for our blog, Festival of Stuff 2025: Stratford Extravaganza, to see (and hear) the Festival through his eyes (and ears) in our video.
During our Culinary Seaweed Masterclass, new flavours, textures and smells were explored. We welcomed seaweed lovers and haters alike, with one participant joining us to overcome their dislike of the divisive algae (and, by the end of the session, they were a self-confessed convert, having discovered new, interesting ways for them to enjoy this unique food).
The Japanese Joinery Masterclass created a fun, supportive environment for complete newcomers to achieve something that they admitted they never thought they'd be able to, leaving with a new, insatiable itch to explore woodworking further. Visitors exclaimed their delight for the masterclasses' detailed explanations, learning everyday practical tips - like from the basic skill of properly using a pencil and ruler - as well as more complex principles featured in Japanese joinery.
Our Silver Twisting Masterclass turned people's precious metal dreams into a reality, with users bending, hammering and melting silver to create one-of-a-kind jewellery and small sculptural pieces. Visitors explored the processes of hardening, annealing and 'pickling' metal, and considered how silver can be twisted and manipulated to take on unique character and form.
The Historic & Electronic Embroidery Masterclass encouraged people to problem solve on the spot, learning historic sewing skills and contemporary electronic techniques, intertwining embroidery silk with conductive thread to connect the past and present. The result? Beautiful stitched patterns that lit up or created a synthesised sound when connected to a touch-responsive textile sensor.
Our Rags to Rope Masterclass inspired people to turn discarded pieces into riches, breathing new life into unloved garments. Whether the item was 'Worn Out Emotional' or 'Brand New and Guilty', in this session, they became a useful resource once more. Visitors considered complex mixed fibres, twisting and manipulating fabrics once destined for landfill.
Our Materials Library Drawing Masterclass dared people to create without overthinking - and at times, without seeing. Challenged to sketch in unexpected ways through touch alone, visitors made beautiful, intricate illustrations whilst feeling objects hidden under cloths. Encouraged to walk around and mix up their surroundings, each person developed their reactive creative skills whilst using an array of different tools and materials.
Our Recycled Papermaking Masterclass balanced noisy splashing with high concentration, as members explored the entire papermaking process from blending pulp to rolling out a finished sheet. This session particularly explored the possibilities and challenges of working with repurposed 'old' paper, delicately moving the recycled fibres to create beautifully unique layers and textures.
