In true Institute of Making fashion, we also embraced experimentation and play in the most unexpected of ways, from learning about the art and chemistry of dough aerating by getting our hands (and toes) messy in a pizza dough paddling pool, to exploring taste and flavour through smell with the mixologists from Sip Sessions at our experimental atomised lemonade stand.
Our Science of Ignition stand brought the heat back, as chemist Andres and physicist Jess used gases to conduct bright, colourful flame tests, creating blazes, sparks and smokes. A sweat was also worked up at our Bernoulli Games obstacle courses, with people testing their skills, speed and hand-eye coordination whilst using fluid dynamics to their advantage, keeping balls of varying sizes afloat in the air streams of hairdryers and fans.
Visitors also filled their bellies with cheesy mini-toasts, watching as their creations bubbled, oozed, puffed, caramelised, crisped and burnt under the blue flame of the propane burner.
All of this and much, much more - with a backing track of whimsy, melodical sounds by Del Titicaca Panpipes and an expert whistler.
