The Festival of Stuff 2025: Stratford Extravaganza

A huge thank you to all those who joined the Festival of Stuff 2025!

It was a pleasure to host you at Bloomsbury for our specialist making masterclasses, and an honour to share our Stratford space with you for our spectacular festival finale, the Festival of Stuff Saturday Extravaganza.

Stratford Extravaganza

Our Stratford Extravaganza was full of gusty goodness, as we explored the theme of Wind.

We delved into this world at varying scales: from the gigantic, mind-boggling heights of hot air balloons and a hand-built electric hovercraft (with a tombola system for rides, of course), to palm-sized tea-powered Stirling engines.

Together, we designed flying objects, engineered propellers, and investigated wind tunnels. We joined forces for a large-scale communal rope-making activity, learnt the historic art of basketry and immersed ourselves in the detailed process of parachute stitching in an ode to our hot air balloon.

In true Institute of Making fashion, we also embraced experimentation and play in the most unexpected of ways, from learning about the art and chemistry of dough aerating by getting our hands (and toes) messy in a pizza dough paddling pool, to exploring taste and flavour through smell with the mixologists from Sip Sessions at our experimental atomised lemonade stand.

Our Science of Ignition stand brought the heat back, as chemist Andres and physicist Jess used gases to conduct bright, colourful flame tests, creating blazes, sparks and smokes. A sweat was also worked up at our Bernoulli Games obstacle courses, with people testing their skills, speed and hand-eye coordination whilst using fluid dynamics to their advantage, keeping balls of varying sizes afloat in the air streams of hairdryers and fans.

Visitors also filled their bellies with cheesy mini-toasts, watching as their creations bubbled, oozed, puffed, caramelised, crisped and burnt under the blue flame of the propane burner.

All of this and much, much more - with a backing track of whimsy, melodical sounds by Del Titicaca Panpipes and an expert whistler.

Thank you to all of our amazing activity leads for bringing their skills, imagination and innovation to the Festival.

As always, thank you to our incredible volunteers who give their time to us, to make sure that the event is the best it possibly can be.

And a huge thank you to our wonderful media team who helped us to capture every moment:
