The 2019 Festival of Stuff runs during the first week of July. It begins with four days of brilliant bookable making masterclasses and culminates in a big drop-in Extravaganza of materials and making on Saturday 6th July.

Big Make: Enamelling

Our ‘Big Make’ sessions are open to all members and teach skills from our specialist masterclasses in a casual drop-in setting during Makespace opening hours. In this Big Make session you can explore the process of enamelling with artist and metal worker, Helen Carnac.

Member Masterclass: Enameling

Explore the process of enamelling and its historical context with artist and metal worker, Helen Carnac. Through a series of short demonstrations, participants will be taken through the basic principles and methods of fusing vitreous enamel to metal before trying techniques themselves and creating a small panel in the process.

As part of the session, James will explore the Institute’s wondrous Materials Library and our relationship to the made world. Participants will come away with a unique home made design.

Member Masterclass: Tin Can Furnace
Monday 29 April 2019 10:00am - 6:00pm
Join the Institute of Making and Stephen Coles to build your own furnace from a humble aluminium tin in this two-day-long masterclass. The workshop will teach you how to construct an experimental blast furnace that should, fingers crossed, be able to melt iron by the second day of the workshop. Participants will also carve out a relief-work to cast with the molten iron.

The art of flint-knapping is a skill that has been forgotten since the end of the Bronze Age. In this Masterclass, members will learn how to make arrowheads, spearheads, hand-axes and scrapers from brittle flint with master flint-knapper, primitive technologist and archaeologist Karl Lee.
