Designer James Shaw joins the Institute of Making to reconsider commonly used materials through surprising new processes in this hands-on masterclass. As part of the session, James will explore the Institute’s wondrous Materials Library and open up a conversation about our relationship to the made world. Participants will come away with a unique object of their own design.

James Shaw is a designer and a maker exploring the material landscape in a hands on way. He is a graduate of the Royal College of Art's Design Products programme and now runs a studio in London working on projects that interrogate the material, systemic and formal approaches to the creation of objects. Frequently his work considers the resources around us challenging the notion of ‘waste’ to create new beautiful materials.

The Institute of Making is a multidisciplinary research club for those interested in the made world: from molecules to buildings, synthetic skin to spacecraft, soup to diamonds, socks to cities. Through its Makespace, Materials Library and events programme, the Institute aims to provide all makers with a creative home in which to innovate, contemplate and understand all aspects of materials, and explore their relationship to making.
