Member Masterclass: Concrete Table

Join Leigh Cameron to mix up, cast and polish a concrete table using a bucket as a mould. Leigh will explain and demonstrate the processes involved in making this object, which he designed himself, after which you will get the chance to making your own. Prepare to get messy!

Maker in Residence – Leigh Cameron, Concrete

For a whole week artist and maker Leigh Cameron will be using the Institute of Making as his studio and creating surprising concrete pieces. Join Leigh to explore and play with concrete – find out how to push the boundaries of this age-old material using his unique and extensively researched formulations of concrete as well as an array of aggregates, pigments, moulds and tools.

Join archaeologist Beth Munro, glassworker Shelley James and metalsmith Necole Schmitz to explore how ancient craftspeople transformed Roman glass mosaics and metal pipes, then mimic these methods to make your own creations! This event will highlight recent archaeological research on Roman villa recycling and investigate the properties of ancient materials through exciting hands-on making.

Public Open Day: PLASTICS

Our Saturday Extravaganza in October tackles plastics: discovering the miraculous material properties of this contentious group of materials; testing it physically with different hands-on making processes; unpicking the thorny issues of current plastics use, circular lifecycles and recycling processes; and taking a look at plastics’ remarkable cultural history.

Member Masterclass: Super 8 Film
Monday 03 September 2018 10:00am - 5:00pm
Join our summery masterclass to shoot actual film on Super 8 and learn how to develop it yourself using washing soda, vitamin C tablets and coffee. Teams of participants will be lent Super 8 cine-cameras to shoot footage, after which workshop leader Ben Slotover will show participants how to develop, dry, spool and project the Super 8 film, ending with a screening of the freshly shot film footage!
