For a whole week artist and metalworker Helen Carnac will be using the Institute of Making as her studio and creating thoughtful enamel pieces. Join Helen to explore and play with enamel – find out how to use the Makespace enamel kiln, discover the instant gratification of firing vitreous porcelain on copper, and consider the nature of mark making through the process of sgraffito.

My Research Makespace: Laser-scanning for PHX [X is for Xylonite]

At our event, Frances Scott, an artist working with moving image, will screen her new film work PHX [X is for Xylonite]. Frances worked at Institute of Making over a number of weeks to produce specialist laser scans, which would become animated forms in the final film. Following the screening, she will discuss how she made use of the Institute of Making to further her research through making.

In this workshop, designer Rahel Pfrommer will teach the simplest and most important shape within jewellery making; the ring. Participants will learn how to cut, shape and file silver, to create their very own silver ring or more sculptural jewellery pieces.

Public Open Day: GASES

Public Open Day: GASES

Saturday 26 October 2019 1:00pm - 5:00pm

Save the date for a Saturday Extravaganza on the theme of GASES. From fermentation to levitation, and with foams, farts and steam engines; we will explore the intangible materials that are a vital but (often) invisible part of our lives. As always, the Institute of Making will be open to the public on the day, giving visitors the opportunity to have a glimpse of the Materials Library and its wondrous collection of stuff.
