Join fermentation expert Jelena Belgrave for a foray into the world of metabolic food-processing, organic acids, bacteria and yeast. We will explore what drives people to ferment, how to do it safely at home, and look at different fermentation types before settling on lactic acid fermentation. This masterclass spans two Mondays in order to explore the two different lactic acid fermentation processes: brining and dry-salting.

At our event, Frances Scott, an artist working with moving image, will screen her new film work PHX [X is for Xylonite]. Frances worked at Institute of Making over a number of weeks to produce specialist laser scans, which would become animated forms in the final film. Join the Institute of Making and Stephen Coles to build your own furnace from a humble aluminium tin in this two-day-long masterclass. The workshop will teach you how to construct an experimental blast furnace that should, fingers crossed, be able to melt iron by the second day of the workshop. Participants will also carve out a relief-work to cast with the molten iron.

Digital logic was never meant to be used to make music, so that’s exactly what Jakub Zalesak is going to teach us how to do. In the process, we’ll walk through the process of designing a Printed Circuit Board, learn how to solder beautiful builds, explore the niche world of logic synthesizers from triangles and squares to the hard nasal sound of oscillator sync, and take a peek at the nature of sound and electricity. You will leave with a synth to impress (or annoy) your friends and hopefully new views on what makes sound.

Join our summery masterclass to shoot actual film on Super 8 and learn how to develop it yourself using washing soda, vitamin C tablets and coffee. Teams of participants will be lent Super 8 cine-cameras to shoot footage, after which workshop leader Ben Slotover will show participants how to develop, dry, spool and project the Super 8 film, ending with a screening of the freshly shot film footage!

Join the Institute of Making Raft Race crew and spend three days building a glorious fleet of coracles, before spending a fourth and final day competing in (and winning, ahem) the annual London Makespace raft race in the Regents Canal!
In this Masterclass, Kevin and Ellen Grimley will show us how to build these traditional riverboats, which are round in shape, paddled with one oar and have been used since primitive times.

The deep-sea is the earth’s last unexplored frontier, an ecosystem beyond the reach of sunlight, which we know very little about. But PhD student Stephen Long is discovering more with low-cost video rigs that he produced in the Makespace. ‘My Research Makespace’ is our new informal research event series for members.
