Sophie Thomas OBE stands at the forefront of a pile of plastic waste. She looks to her left side, a face mask hanging round her neck.

Do we really know what goes into our stuff? Where do things go when we throw them away? How could we design for longevity, keeping materials and products in use longer? In this research talk, Sophie Thomas OBE will share the questions, investigations and discoveries that have shaped more than three decades of work, delving into the intersection of design, materials and sustainability.

Beginning by guiding you through the process of raw material extraction and ending at the base of the world's rapidly growing waste piles, Sophie will reveal the complex web of sorting, travelling, cutting, cooking, shaping and processing.

Drawing on more than 30 years of experience in sustainability, waste management, circular economy and design innovation, Sophie will challenge you to think differently about the materials that pass through our hands. Through stories, insights and provocations, we'll explore how designers, makers and consumers can rethink value, embrace longevity and keep materials in use for longer.

Sophie Thomas OBE is a Co-Founder of ETSAW, working to reverse waste for good. As well as a designer, sustainability and circular economy pioneer whose work spans waste reduction, material innovation, systems thinking and communication. For over three decades, she has worked with businesses, governments and organisations to rethink the way products, materials and systems are designed, helping to create more responsible and resource conscious futures.

This Research Talk is suitable for ages 16+. Any person under 18 needs to be accompanied by an appropriate adult.

What to expect

Important information about our ballot system for this event:

We are using a randomised ballot system for this event.

Our ballot will go live on Monday 28th September at 05:00. To be in with a chance of joining us, select as many masterclasses as you are interested in attending and submit your entry before Sunday 11th October at 23:59. Please note: it makes no difference when you submit your entry; entering early does not increase your chances of securing a space. All places will be offered at random.

If successful, you will be emailed a link to book a space on one masterclass from Monday 12th October 2026. Successful applicants will have 24 hours to book their slot; however, if you do not book within 24 hours, your place will be offered to someone else. Even if you have selected multiple masterclasses on your submission, you will only be able to book one masterclass. This masterclass will be pre-chosen for you at random from your selection.

If you are interested in attending our research talk and/or Materials Library tour, this will not affect your chances of gaining a slot on a masterclass, and will not count towards your one masterclass booking.

Once all tickets are fully booked by the ballot winners, we will notify everyone who signed up and offer them the opportunity to join our waiting list for last-minute dropouts.
