In this masterclass, led by furniture maker Emma Leslie, participants will make a stool in a day. The day-long masterclass will give you a basic understanding of furniture construction using hand tools. The class combines hand and power tools, and you will learn techniques such as planing, sawing, routing, drilling, sanding and shaping.

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver or platinum. Kintsugi is a very popular practice in Japan, however, it takes 3 weeks to repair a small area and fill with gold. Kintsugi can be seen to have similarities to the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, an embracing of the flawed or imperfect.

Sand casting metal is one of the earliest and simplest ways to work metal. This accessible technique offers a unique insight into the fundamentals of fine silversmithing. The challenge is to build a moving robot that can pick up an egg and travel a short distance before putting it down in a nest, without smashing it! Your robot will need to travel over a variety of different terrains/surfaces, straddle a post, go under a limbo pole, negotiate a sideways slope and navigate through a slalom to finally deliver the fresh, un-smashed egg, into its/ nest.

Participants will build an animatronic copy of their own eye! The sessions will begin by demonstrating how to make a mould of your eye and how to use this to cast a latex copy of your eyelid. The next step will be to construct a mechanism to mount a doll’s eyeball so that it can move from side to side, then stick the eyelids over them. You will even be able to take the eye home!

Members get to dramatically glaze their ceramics by taking the red-hot glazed pots from the kiln, and burying them in sawdust. The resulting pots and cracks in the glaze are beautifully smoked and blackened where they have soaked up the carbon from the burnt wood.

This event coincides with the Petrie Museum Festival of Pots, which celebrates and explores their often overlooked collection of ancient Egyptian clay vessels.

To make our creations interactive or animated, we often need to build in electronics or programmability.  This used to be the preserve of electronic engineers, but in the last decade the Arduino has changed all that. Arduino is a simple, very cheap computer specialized for interacting with the real world. This introductory workshop is aimed at makers with minimal electronic or programming skills, and led by Mark Handley, inventor and UCL’s Robotics Programming specialist.

Artists and neon light specialists Julia Bickerstaff and Richard Wheater run taster sessions exploring what neon is, how it can be harnessed to produce light, and how to make neon tubes. See glowing examples of neon art explained, expect mesmerising demonstrations of cutting, blowing, stretching, bending and fusing glass with flame, filling with gas and illuminating with electricity.
