Members Masterclass: Sand casting with silver
Friday 28 October 2016 10:00am - 11:30am
Booking opens Thursday 13th at 8pm
“Working with metal is a deeply rewarding experience. There is something elemental and magical about the process of heating metal until it turns to liquid; the silvery pool of molten metal spinning in the bright orange crucible.”
Sand casting metal is one of the earliest and simplest ways to work metal. This accessible technique offers a unique insight into the fundamentals of fine silversmithing. During this masterclass you will learn how to pack the sand into frames, to take moulds using the sand and to heat silver to a liquid state before being poured.
Grant McCaig is a practicing silversmith and educator. His work is exhibited internationally and forms part of several national silver collections including the Goldsmiths Company Modern Collection, the National Museum of Scotland and Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. In 2011 Grant travelled to Bogota, Colombia to teach and share his metal working skills. During this period he was introduced to sand casting, a process that he continues to work with today, driving of much of his current practice.
