Potters wheel

1 – A quick description:

Shimpo potter’s wheel is for those who prefer to seat down when throwing. Motor with forward and reverse speed controls to accommodate right and left-hand users.

Please note: Whilst throwing on a potter’s wheel can look to be a fast way of creating with clay, it can take many hours of practice to achieve this level.

2 – What can I use this tool for?

In pottery, a potter's wheel is a machine used in the shaping (known as throwing) of round ceramic ware. The wheel may also be used during the process of trimming the excess body from drier ware, and for applying incised decoration or rings of colour using slips and specific glazes.

3 – Materials used with this tool:

All clays can be used to throw on this tool, but preparation of your material is essential. Please check with a technician if you plan to use a clay that is not supplied by the IofM as we want to ensure you will be able to fire your work to ceramics.

4 – What training do I need to use this tool?

To use our potters wheel you will need to book and attend the potter’s wheel induction.

The training teaches you effective ways to prepare you material and make basic cylinder forms. You will also be shown how and where to store your work as well as the firing procedure.

When you have completed the tool training session, you will be able to book time slots through the Institute of makings website.
