Ceramics Area

1 – A quick description:

The ceramics area is situated on the ground floor of the workshop and includes the wooden clay bench, white plaster bench and sink area. Most of our pottery, hand-building and mould-making tools are located here, as well as our stocks of clay, plaster, glazes and other consumables.

2 – What can I use this area for?

This area is used for a variety of processes including wedging and reclaiming clay, hand building, glazing and under glazing, mould making, casting and cleaning.

3 – Materials used with this area:

You can use many different materials in this area such as clay, glazes, pigments, plaster, concrete, silicone rubbers, and glass frits. The Institute of Making supplies most of the above on a fair-use basis. If you wish to work with or add other materials to your ceramics project instead of purely using the Institute of Making stock, you must speak to a technician first and your brought-in materials must be accompanied by their Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

Due to the type of extraction we have in the workshop, it is not possible to fire any burnouts (e.g. paper clay) in our kiln.

4 – What training do I need to use this area?

To use our ceramics area, you will need to arrange an induction with a technician. Pop into the workshop during opening hours and speak with one of our technicians to complete a brief 10-minute induction by one of the team.  Once you have completed the training you will be able to use the ceramics area.
