Key information

Yellow tools require further training. Training will be available either in the form of a bookable tool training session, or by dropping into the space and making an arrangement with a technician.

A potter's wheel is a machine used in the shaping (known as throwing) of clay into round ceramic ware.

Please note

Whilst throwing on a potter’s wheel can look like a fast way of creating objects out of clay, it can take many hours of practice to achieve this level. Please see a technician about specific glazes and slips for your ceramic ware. Please see a technician if you plan to use clay that is not supplied by the Institute of Making.

What can I use this tool for?

Potter's wheels are excellent for creating round, hollow shapes out of clay, which can then be fired in the kiln to become ceramic. The wheel may also be used during the process of trimming the excess body from drier ware, and for applying decoration or rings of colour using slips and glazes.
