Clay 3D Printers (Wasp)

How to access this tool

Drop-in use

Drop into the workshop during our opening hours to use this tool, but ask a technician if you need any training first.

Key information

Yellow tools require further training. Training will be available either in the form of a bookable tool training session, or by dropping into the space and making an arrangement with a technician.

Clay 3D printers use the same technology as other 3D printers, but use a clay body as a depositing material instead of plastic. They work by using Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) - a technology that moves a printhead and an aircompressor to squeeze clay onto a build plate to slowly build up an object.

Our Wasp printers are versatile for various projects.

Please note

While 3D printing with clay can be a useful fabrication method for many projects, it is a slow process, messy and best used for prototyping and experimental work. It is not a suitable tool for objects that have a lot of complicated shapes or overhangs. The Wasp takes a long time to set up and clean after use, so please bear this in mind when planning a project.

What can I use this tool for?

Projects in clay that need specific dimensions or simple shapes, or those that need to be replicated more than once.

Simple models from CAD files, and those that are generated from scanned data such as MRI, laser scans or photogrammetry.

What training do I need to use this tool?

The induction for the clay 3D printer is by arrangement with a technician.

If you would like to use the clay 3D printer, come to the workshop during opening hours and work out a time to be inducted with one of the technical staff.
