Sand casting metal is one of the earliest and simplest ways to work metal. This accessible technique offers a unique insight into the fundamentals of fine silversmithing. During this masterclass you will learn how to pack the sand into frames, to take moulds using the sand and to heat silver to a liquid state before being poured.
Grant McCaig is a practicing silversmith and educator. His work is exhibited internationally and forms part of several national silver collections including the Goldsmiths Company Modern Collection, the National Museum of Scotland and Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. In 2011 Grant travelled to Bogota, Colombia to teach and share his metal working skills. During this period he was introduced to sand casting, a process that he continues to work with today, driving of much of his current practice.
