Bottle Sealing Wax

Material ID: 2724

Description

This bottle sealing wax is a shiny and brittle wax formulation made of pine resin, beeswax, paraffin wax and pigment. It was used in the past on wine and spirit bottles to protect the corks from moisture in the air, with the added bonus of protecting from rodents and providing tamper proof evidence. It is now mainly used for marketing purposes because modern, more technical composite corks don’t need the extra help any more!

Check out our blog post for a longer read about the weird and wonderful properties of waxes, including beeswax (the glandular produce of the humble honeybee), earth wax that is mined from seams in the ground and artificial eye wax that is used to make prosthetic glass eyes.
