Discover the electrifying intersection of science and art in this hands-on masterclass with Unit Lab.

Design and make your own custom circuit board using copper tape and solder, and then use it to make vivid, one of a kind prints with electricity and cabbage juice, dubbed Electro Colour by Unit Lab.

This innovative printing process uses copper tape, solder and red cabbage juice (a natural pH indicator) to reveal vibrant patterns as electricity runs through the paper. As the current flows, water is split into hydrogen and oxygen, shifting the pH and transforming cabbage-soaked paper into a canvas of electric colour. As a result, you'll leave with your own beautifully unique Electro Colour print.

Unit Lab is the creative partnership of Cindy Strobach and Mike Vanis. Based in South London, they design objects, installations and workshops that bridge science, art and the natural world. Previous projects include a playground that incorporates perspective and distortion (Mirror Shape Play), a ruler that measures both length and weight (Gravity Ruler, and a collection of plates that capture frequency patterns (Frequency Plates).

Attendee information

Important information about our ticket ballot for this event:

  • We are using a ballot system to book tickets for these masterclasses.
  • The ballot is open for a limited time: from Monday 20th October until 23:59pm on Sunday 26th October
  • Entering the ballot means that you've entered into a draw for the opportunity to book a ticket. From Monday 27th onwards, successful entrants will be automatically booked onto the event and sent an event confirmation email. If you can no longer attend please cancel your place so someone else can be booked on.
  • Unfortunately, the ballot may be oversubscribed, so entering it doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be offered tickets.
  • Once tickets are fully booked, we will notify everyone and offer the opportunity to join the waiting list.
  • Do you have specific access requirements?

Everyone at UCL is welcome in our spaces. We strive to make all of our processes accessible, including attending our events and workshops, and using our website and booking systems. Please message us if you have any questions, or requirements, or need assistance using our platforms. We'll be happy to help.

We're always interested in feedback to help us improve access to our activities. Please contact events@instituteofmaking.org.uk if you'd like to chat.
