These metallic threads are actually slivers of pure stainless steel. From this fibrous material stainless steel yarn can be made, or alternatively, it can be blended with other fibres depending on its desired application. As a metal, this material allows for unique and specific material properties and is used within applications such as shielding, fiber reinforcement and the making of electrically conductive and electrostatically-controlled yarns (for use in airplanes, for example). What you may not be able to surmise simply by looking at this sample is that it's magnetic. If you hold a magnet close to the fibres the threads will begin to crawl towards the magnetic field.
