If you ever feel the need to go searching for scorpions, they are actually fairly easy to find since they fluoresce under UV light and glow a vivid turquoise-blue as a result of two chemicals in their cuticle. Nobody really knows why they glow, but theories have been put forward that they use this property to lure their prey or to recognise each other. Another theory suggests they use their fluorescent skin as a sort of ‘eye’ for using in the dark. This ‘eye’ could help them to detect the dim UV light emitted by the moon and stars and to find shelter from it, and from predators.
