This bar of recycled lead and glass was once a lead glass used in cathode ray tube (CRT) television screens. Lead glass was used for the television screens for its shatter proof properties but also its high lead content which help block most X-ray emissions. Lead glass contains 18 to 40% lead (II) oxide. This 1kg lead bar is the amount of lead that is extracted from one television screen.

The production of CRT displays has been mostly replaced by LED, OLED or plasma displays for many reasons, including the environmental hazard and health concerns it poses if not disposed properly. Since 2001, regulations require CRTs to be brought to special recycling facilities. The glass components are seperated from the glass and recycled for the production of new television sets. The lead glass is also melted down and sold to other countries that still produce CRTs.
