Milling Machine

1 – A quick description:

Milling is a very common form of machining, and is a material removal process. Our milling machine can create a variety of features in your original ‘work piece’ by cutting away the unwanted material. A milling machine is similar to a drill press but allows controlled movement of the workpiece on a horizontal bed under the cutting tool.

2 – What can I use this tool for?

Often used to machine flat surfaces, a milling machine can also produce irregular surfaces with great accuracy. You can also use it to create custom prototypes, moulds, and to generally drill, bore and cut slots and pockets. The milling machine can be ideal for adding precision features to an object whose basic shape has already been formed.

3 – Materials used with this tool:

People mostly mill metals and plastics, but our milling machine is sometimes used for wood.

4 – What training do I need to use this tool?

To use our milling machine you will need to arrange an induction with a technician. Pop into the Makespace during opening hours and speak with one of our technicians to work out a time to be inducted by one of the team.  Once you have completed the training you will be able to book the milling machine online on our website.
