This masterclass provides an introduction to fundamental foundry techniques using readily available materials. Stephen Coles will show participants how to make moulds for sand casting in order to produce a bronze relief tile. Sand casting is a common production method for metal objects, from a few kilos to several tonnes. Sand casting isn’t just flexible in the size of its creations – it can also make for extremely complex or detailed castings, and can be used to cast most metal alloys.

The finished moulds will be cast with bronze melted in a chimney furnace the following day at the  Festival of Stuff Saturday Extravanganza. Visit between 1-5pm on Saturday 7th July to see the bronze casting demonstration.

Stephen Coles is a sculptor and founder based in the Dorset countryside, and has been working with molten metal for fifteen years. He established and runs Coles Castings, a fine art foundry, which offers a range of casting services across a variety of disciplines and specializes in the production of cast iron and cast bronze sculpture.

This workshop is part of the Festival of Stuff.
