Welcome to the Institute of Making

The Institute of Making is a multidisciplinary research club for those interested in the made world: from makers of molecules to makers of buildings, synthetic skin to spacecraft, soup to diamonds, socks to cities.

Membership of the Institute and access to our workshop and materials lirbary is available (and free) to all UCL staff and students.

Becoming a Member
Once you create a profile on our webstie you will be able to book member events, technician consultations and join in with our making circles. You will also be able to book inductions for the workshop and specific tools as and when the team run these - currently they are on pause under COVD-19 restrictions.

Already a member?
Log into our website or check your email to see what exciting activities we are running that you can join.
We regularly run technician consultations, hands-on masterclasses and making circles as part of the Institute of Making events.

Public Access
If you are not a UCL staff or student, you can join in with our free public events instead.
Our public programme of symposia, masterclasses, and open days explores the links between academic research and hands-on experience, and celebrates the sheer joy of stuff. We are currently operating events online.
Sign up to our mailing list to be the first to hear of new upcoming events.

Materials Library
At the heart of the Institute of Making is the Materials Library – a growing repository of some of the most extraordinary materials on earth, gathered together for their ability to fire the imagination and advance conceptualisation.
The online Materials Library catalogue can be viewed here and our most recent Materials Library blog explorations can be read here.
