3D Printing

16 September 2011

The Institute of Making's researcher Phil is preparing for his experiments using a 3D printer. The printer works by printing out very thin layers of plastic on top of each other to build up a 3D structure. The printed piece will be used as a sample holder in his experiments on the touch and taste of materials. At the Institute, we are interested in studying the sensual and aesthetic properties of materials, both from a materials science and a psychophysical perspective. The idea is that by studying and understanding these properties we will be able to help fill the gap that exists between the materials science and materials arts communities.
