There is more to this sample of black fabric than meets the eye. The thread used to weave this piece is made of pure carbon. You may be more familiar with carbon fibre in the form of the extremely tough composites used in high performance applications, such as fighter jets and Formula 1 cars. These composites are made by covering woven carbon sheets in special resins and baking them at high temperatures. The carbon thread itself is made of bundles of many thousands of extremely fine carbon fibres. These fibres are made by drawing out organic polymers, such as polyacrylonitrile, into thin strands and baking them to drive off all but the carbon atoms.
