Member Masterclass: Silver Ring

In this workshop, designer Rahel Pfrommer will teach the simplest and most important shape within jewellery making; the ring. Participants will learn how to cut, shape and file silver, to create their very own silver ring or more sculptural jewellery pieces.

Public Open Day: GASES

Save the date for a Saturday Extravaganza on the theme of GASES. From fermentation to levitation, and with foams, farts and steam engines; we will explore the intangible materials that are a vital but (often) invisible part of our lives. As always, the Institute of Making will be open to the public on the day, giving visitors the opportunity to have a glimpse of the Materials Library and its wondrous collection of stuff.

Big Make: Papermaking

Our ‘Big Make’ sessions are open to all members and teach skills from our specialist masterclasses in a casual drop-in setting during Makespace opening hours. In this Big Make papermaker and artist Mandy will explore papermaking through working with Japanese kozo fibres and recycled pulps from found papers, creating experimental paper sheets by combining the two.

Festival of Stuff: Crazy Materials Golf

Bring your A-game and your love of materials to our ultimate Festival of Stuff Saturday Extravaganza. This year we’re taking our love of mini golf as the starting point for a whole host of great making and materials related activities. We are also building a special mini golf course, where holes will pose all manner of material challenges in true Institute of Making style. Our events are free and open to all.

Using two or three simple stitches, embroiderer and artist Sally Hewett will show you how to make a unique nipple or pair of lips with thread, embroidery hoops, felt padding and other materials resulting in a sculptural body embroidery piece.

This masterclass, led by Iku Nishikawa, is a beginners guide to kintsugi: the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with precious metal powders such as gold, silver, brass or platinum.
